CAREER OPPORTUNITY – STAFF ATTORNEY

Disability Rights South Dakota is currently seeking an attorney for the position of Staff Attorney in the Pierre, SD office. The primary purpose of this position is to provide legal representation to clients of Disability Rights South Dakota and perform oversight of program(s) within Disability Rights South Dakota. The successful candidate will hold a Juris Doctor degree with admission to the state bar or within six months of hiring date; one to three years applicable law and litigation experience is preferred. The candidate should be highly motivated, organized, have excellent communication skills (written and oral), be detail orientated, and understand database programs. Other skills needed are the ability to meet and greet the public, work in a team environment, and understand the service delivery system. This position requires the incumbent to have knowledge of grant management including compliance to the sponsored programs at the local, state and/or federal levels (depending on granting agency). The incumbent should have knowledge of state laws, programs, and issues concerning persons with disabilities and understanding of a non-profit office environment. CAREER OPPORTUNITY – ASR

POSITION: This position in Sioux Falls, South Dakota is for an Advocacy Services Representative (ASR) for Disability Rights South Dakota. While tasks will be done throughout the agency’s programs, emphasis of work will be in the Protection and Advocacy of Individuals with Mental Illness (PAIMI) Program. The position, under the direction of the PAIMI Program and other Directors as required and the Executive Director, involves the successful completion of a wide variety of tasks primarily designed to implement the priorities, goals, and objectives of the DRSD Programs. Duties include, but are not limited to, assisting the Program Director(s) with the implementation of the programs’ priorities, goals and objectives; provide technical assistance to Program Director(s); provide statistical and narrative information and reports on clients served; investigate client complaints, grievances or allegations of abuse & neglect; represent clients in connection with mental illness and other relevant issues; provide assistance to clients, in accordance with federal regulations and directives, negotiate resolution as appropriate of client issues; provide information and referral; disseminate information to the public through outreach and presentations; represent program(s) on appropriate committees or boards; provide written and oral comments on current issues to assist Program Director(s) impact positive systemic change; provide articles for the DRSD agency newsletter; assist clients in negotiation; train clients in self-advocacy skills; refer clients to legal resources when necessary; interpret client rights & allegations in regard to state and federal statutes, regulations and/or facility rules. This person will also do monitoring activities at facilities in South Dakota, along with investigation work for abuse and neglect.

QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of state and federal laws, programs, and issues concerning individuals with mental illness; sound professional judgment; ability to work with limited supervision and comply with South Dakota Advocacy Services’ policies and procedures; oral and written communication skills which allow effective and professional communication with clients, individuals, and organizations; interpersonal skills which will allow a productive working relationship with all staff members, clients, and organizations; organizational skills which will allow for the ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks.

SALARY: $35,000-37,000 D.O.E. and excellent fringe benefits
